So you think you might want to buy a used Kindle in New York. Buying used is often a good idea, but it depends upon the product and if it has good durability and if it will save you any money over buying new.

Although there are many places to buy a Kindle, there are fewer options for getting a used Kindle for sale. Think about this: a big well-known brick and mortar store (a place with a building where shoppers go), even if one exists in New York, does not carry used anything, including not a used one. So where can you find a used Kindle for sale?

Besides stores, there are sometimes other outlets that arrange to carry and sell used Kindles. There are two main outlets for used Kindles. You can find used Kindles for sale on Craigslist, a local option, and on eBay, an online option. Although Craigslist is an option, it has drawbacks. Few models and choices exist at any one time. That was the case when I looked for one here in the Portland, Oregon area. Arrangements to get one locally involve more time and travel than getting one online. Often when meeting the seller of an item from a Craigslist sale the item does not turn out to be in a condition that is acceptable and the trip to get it is a waste. Although eBay is another option to find used kindles for sale, it is not a good choice for this type of item since there is usually no recourse for a used item from individuals if the item is not as advertised or as expected or if the item does not work as it should. It takes quite a bit, including setup with an Amazon account, to see if it works right, and that is not likely to be able to be done thoroughly in a Craigslist purchase.

Used Kindles – What People Say

Here is some discussion from an Amazon forum about buying a used Kindle:

From on 04-03-2011

“I would worry about a stolen one. It would have limited use.”

“You need to be careful on this. Pay only by Paypal so you could get your money back. Ask for the serial number ahead of time. Call Customer Support at 1-866-321-8851 and ask if the serial number is of one that has been reported stolen. Be wary if the seller refuses to give you the serial number. If you get an excuse about why it can’t be registered, you should run in the other direction.”

“Personally, because of the nature of this product, I wouldn’t buy one on eBay.”

“I’m really hesitant to buy any used electronics. I would especially not buy a used Kindle after the last person, here on the forum, had a terrible experience with one that could not be registered at all. I’d rather one new from Amazon with the extended warranty.”

“Amazon makes it a lot tougher on customers buying from third party sellers. When I have a choice, I’ll buy from eBay when I’m not dealing with Amazon.”

From 10-05-2011

“I wouldn’t go to that much trouble because it just isn’t worth it any more, in my opinion. You can get a new one, with warranty, for under $100 now.”

“I don’t ever buy used. I buy new with my credit card in order to increase the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. With new Kindles going for $79, is it really worth it to buy a used one?”

Used Kindle Alternatives

Alternatives to a used Kindle are a new one or a refurbished one. Many people think they would rather have a used vs. a new one. They want a used price. Although reasonable for some things, it does not work out that way for a Kindle. The price points are so narrow between new and used units as to be pointless. So, rather than buy a used one, why not just get a new one?

Nevertheless, if you still want a used unit, just get it from the source. Below you’ll find two older generation units in the used category and seven current units in the new category:

Kindle Wireless Reading Device 1st Generation ” has EVDO wireless; discontinued avail used and maybe refurbished
Kindle Wireless Reading Device 2nd Generation ” has free 3G; discontinued; avail used
Kindle DX ” has free 3G globally
Kindle Keyboard – has Wi-Fi (used to be called the Kindle 3)
Kindle Keyboard 3G – has 3G and Wi-Fi
Kindle Touch ” has Wi-Fi
Kindle Touch 3G ” has 3G and Wi-Fi
Kindle Fire ” has Wi-Fi

Click on any of the above links to get right to the Amazon page for details, specs, etc. Be aware that on many of the pages you can toggle between the ads version and the no-ads version of the same model. From any of them you can search for used Kindles on a search line.
